Chevrolet to offer diesel Cruze in the US

An inside GM source has squeaked about the arrival of a diesel-powered Chevrolet Cruze in the US market in two years.

Chevrolet has given a green light to a diesel-powered Cruze compact sedan for the United States. The diesel Cruze is expected to achieve 50mpg on the highway, giving GM a better chance of achieving the upcoming government clamp-down on fuel economy standards. This is a 13mpg improvement over the already-frugal Chevrolet Cruze Eco (pictured).

Although Chevrolet has not officially announced the vehicle yet, inside sources have said the diesel Cruze is approximately two years away. General Motors already sells diesel versions of the Cruze in Europe and Australia (where it is called the Holden Cruze). No official statement from GM has been made, and spokesman Tom Wilkinson declined to comment.

No pricing or horsepower information is available for the diesel Cruze, and although there is no confirmation of a diesel Buick Verano to complement the Cruze, with which is shares a platform, there is speculation. This will be the first time a Buick, or any GM passenger car for that matter, has been offered with a diesel engine since the ill-fated Buick Century diesel back in the mid-1980s.

Just FYI, Chevy offers a 2000 CC version of diesel engined car in India which is a smashing hit. The power is 150 BHP, Torque of 309 NM, Top Speed of 210 KMPH and a mileage of 14KM/L. This car is not sold with Gasoline engine at all and is beating, Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla both since the time it is launched. Civic has just gasoline engine whereas Corolla comes with both Gas and Diesel Engines.
